James D.'s Story
Graduated Class of '64, spent one more year in Spain. Went with family to Oklahoma, Altus A.F.B., spent 1 year there, then moved out on my own to Riverside,CA. Went to Riverside City College, meet my wife, fell in love, got drafted, but enlisted instead to spend the summer with my wife. Went into Special Forces (Green Berets), stayed in 3 yrs. Married in 1967, got discharged in 1970, came back to California with my wife & 2 kids. Went back to school, Nursing, got my degree, had our 3rd child, and went into Psych Nursing. Worked 30 yrs at Patton State Hospital, retired then went back to work part-time to keep my retirement savings secure. Somewhere along the way I learned to SURF, which is now my favorite sport/hobby. I also love the challenge of adopting dogs that have been abused/abandoned, etc....Expand for more
Currently have 2: a 6 yr.old female German Shepard who was abused & terrified of everything when I first got her. She is now an excellent watch dog and protector. Also adopted a (now) 10 month old male Ausie Shepard/Blue Heeler mix. He is smart, cute and always wants to be at my side no matter where I go.
I also enjoy surfing with my grandkids: Tucker - 16, his sister Karlee - 6 1/2, both of whom learned to surf with "Grampy". Karlee has graduated to paddling out on her own, to where the "big guys" surf (cause that's where Grampy goes), and catches waves by herself. All the "mature" surfers like me love it, give her priority on the waves and hoot & holler for her each time she catches a ride.
Married the love of my life in Dec. 1967 and have been happily married ever since (42 yrs this Dec).
